JOMA is the beloved hobby turned business project of fibre artist Emjay Bailey who also spins, knits and crochets. Emjay was later joined by her mother Johane who began dyeing her own yarns and joined Emjay in building a presence in the local fibre community. Johane has since stepped back because of health concerns, but Emjay’s husband, the elusive Sasquatch, has come aboard to support logistics and heavy lifting. Our quality yarns and fibres are milled in Canada and the US, carefully hand washed, prepared and brought to life with vibrant, inspired one of a kind colourways using washfast professional grade acid dyes. We offer a diverse collection of luxurious base yarns and spinning fibres in unique and exquisite shades for creative fibre artists.
It all began when I was just a little girl, always fascinated with and determined to master knitting or crochet or whatever cool stuff those old ladies were always doing. A creative and precocious child with a drive to experiment, I was motivated to make things from early on, and for most of my life, the thing didn’t really matter. Fast forward to 2009, when as an adult who has finally learned to crochet, I launched my own project of tutorials and patterns under the brand name Nerdigurumi and things were heating up. My work initially began in amigurumi crochet and evolved to be more about love for making yarn than making things out of yarn due to repetitive stress injuries that made knitting and crochet difficult. The volume of production quickly highlighted a need for an outlet for my yarn since I couldn’t knit or use most of it, and wanted to dye and experiment in an ongoing way. JOMA Yarn grew from that initial sprout, when Johane, a craft enthusiast herself, joined the team. Since then Johane has stepped back due to health concerns, and my fibre adventures are consistently supported by my ever patient and supportive husband (Mr. Sasquatch) and incredibly supportive knitting group Discovery Knitters, leading me to what you see here today.
